Vodafone Q3 subscriber figures tempt buyers
LONDON, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Shares in Vodafone Airtouch (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L) (NYSE:VOD - news) were in favour on Wednesday amid optimism over third quarter subscriber numbers due at the beginning of next week.

``It's the Americans buying them in front of the new subscriber numbers,' said one dealer.

The stock closed three percent, or 42p, higher at 14.20
pounds.
Third quarter subscriber numbers are due on Monday, October
4.
"We are expecting a record 2.7 million net new subscriptions
worldwide," said James Ross, industry analyst at ABN Amro.
``The previous best quarter was 2.5 million in Q4 1998. We have raised our forecast for market penetration to 40 percent for the end of this year from 38 percent before,' he added.

ABN maintains its ``buy' recommendation.

Interest was also likely to be boosted by a four-for-one stock split which will

Record quarter for UK mobile growth?

Figures for the growth of the UK mobile phone sector in the three months to September 30 are expected to set a new record for quarterly increases in net new subscribers.

Credit Suisse First Boston believes that the overall gain to the four operations in the latest quarter was around 2.7m subscribers, against a previous best of 2.5m in the final quarter of 1998. The detailed figures for Orange will be released on Monday, followed by those for Vodafone AirTouch on Wednesday.
