India Reaches 1.5 million Net Users

[23 September 1999] Internet remains the fastest growing media in India, says a new survey. And India currently has 1.5 million net users.

The Internet has once again proved to be the fastest growing media, according to the Indian readership Survey (IRS '99). As of June 30, 1999, there were 1.5 million Internet users in the country.

Internet usage has augumented rapidly with major growth being reflected in towns with a population of 1 million plus. Internet access has also doubled in the 0.5-1 million Indian towns, says the survey released by the Media Research Users Council, Mumbai.

"In the 1 million plus towns, there were 144,000 Internet users, 158,000 in the 0.5-1 million population towns, and 225,000 in the below-0.5 million population towns, the survey said.

In comparision, the press reaches 32.9 percent of the individuals, TV reaches 47.2 percent, radio reaches 17.7 percent and cinema 12.8 percent.
