26 SEPTEMBER

Sterling Infotech will launch a high-speed Internet access across the country on October 1 using modern Japanese digital subscriber technology (DSL) through a joint venture with Sumitomo Electric.

The high-speed Web access, made available for the first time in India by any company and offered at Rs 1,995 every month, is expected to revolutionise the Internet access business, Dr Vijay Bhatkar, chairman of Sterling's Internet company Dishnet said here. DSL is a new data communication technology that offers high speed Internet access by offering higher bandwidth on the normal telephone lines.

Mr Bhatkar said sterling had recently tied up with Sumitomo Electric for providing the technology in India. Sterling also has the exclusive right to sell DSL technology in the country and non-exclusive rights in other countries except Japan.

He said the company had worked out a price strategy which would enable consumers to get high bandwidth links at a price which was upto 90 per cent lower than the tariff offered by the department of telecom (DoT) for its leased lines. DSL technology Internet would be handy for anyone who uses the Net for more than 50 hours a month since under the present tariff subscribers have to pay Rs 1,200 for 50 hours of dial-up connection, and Rs 800 for access to Internet service providers (ISP).

Mr Bhatkar said the company planned to offer the service in 54 cities in three months's time. Sterling Infotech targets to provide 2.4 lakh SDL connections within a year. On the advantages of DSL technology for using the Internet, he said it bypassed the fixed-phone network but was using the same copper wiring. With this technology, the Internet would be available for two-way data communications. - PTI
