Nec paid 27.5 million, Kyocera and Sharp paid 33 million , Toshiba paid 15 million , Denso paid 20 million , Mitsubsi paid 20 million , etc. Is IDC a charity ?

If it's a charity it's a big one...

Every six months you guys bring up IDC and I always take a look at Daily Graphs for a quick look at Rev and EPS growth. Things are really jumping all over the place, very hard to make sense of at a glance, in and of itself of course no excuse for anything? So what's your take on rev and EPS for next year?

TIA ....Dave

I haven't seen a handset by anyone of these companies.

The license/royalties paid by them was largely for PDC and PHS which do not really exist outside of Japan, but are very big in Japan. Over the last 10 years there have been probably several hundred million PDC/PHS phones sold. Of course, with the intro CDMAOne and W-CDMA in Japan I would expect both of them to slowly trail off. (I have no idea what the PDC/PHS standard looks like - modulations scheme, ... . Long ago I knew, but ... . Thus, it is possible that PHS/PDC have more overlap with IDC's patents.) Just FYI.

Jim - Last post on this subject from me. Speaking not from a technical viewpoint, what disturbs me about IDC is that all of their licenses seem to come at very low rates compared to Qualcomm. From their last 10Q:

Licensing and strategic partner revenue for the three month period ended June 30, 1999 includes $7.9 million in new licenses, $3.8 million related to development efforts for Nokia and Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd. ("Samsung"), and $208,000 in recurring royalties

$208K is not a lot given that PDC and PHS are still pretty big in Japan, and there are so many licensees.
