The ABX performance, assuming it was what you claim, was not representative. Most gold stocks were in a flat to bear market during that period. For example, HM varied between 12 and 14 from '83 to '86 in a long scalloping pattern which was part of wave 2 of the Elliot count and ran up during '87 to 19 and dropped back to 12 to 14 in '88 and following years as part of wave 3. I remember the period well and gold was just in what I call a bear market. Not a dynamic down side market, just boring and pointless. The worst of all worlds. Something to be shunned.
