Centillium and FlowPoint Demonstrate Interoperability of ADSL G.lite Products; Centillium CopperLite Chipset Interoperates with FlowPoint/Cabletron SSR255 Router

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 1999--Centillium Communications, Inc. and FlowPoint Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS), today announced that they have achieved end-to-end interoperability between their Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) G.lite (G.992.2) products.

The interoperability tests were conducted at the InterOperability Lab, located on the campus of the University of New Hampshire, where Centillium and FlowPoint are both members of the multi-vendor ADSL Consortium.

The test bed included the FlowPoint/Cabletron SmartSwitch Router (SSR255) router and Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) line cards based on Centillium's CopperLite CO chipsets. End-to-end interoperability was confirmed with Web browsing at speeds of up to 1536kbps downstream and 512kbps upstream over Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) lines.

"We are very pleased to announce end-to-end interoperability with the FlowPoint/Cabletron SmartSwitch Router, one of the most popular customer premises equipment solutions for small businesses, telecommuters, and home offices," said Faraj Aalaei, co-founder and vice president of marketing for Centillium.

"Centillium's CopperLite chipset is being widely adopted by market leading central office equipment makers," said Chuck Waggoner, president of FlowPoint. "By achieving successful interoperability with Centillium, the FlowPoint/Cabletron SmartSwitch Router can now be confidently deployed by G.lite Network Service Providers using CopperLite-based DSLAM line cards."

Centillium CO Chipset Solutions

The two-part CopperLite(TM) CO (central office) chipset consists of the CT-L21DC08 Digital chip and CT-L21AC08 Analog chip. Networking equipment manufacturers can use these high-performance, power-efficient chipsets as the foundation for multi-port line cards in Digital Loop Carriers (DLCs), DSLAMs, and other carrier-class network platforms.

The CopperLite CO chipset is highly integrated and offers maximum port density, supporting up to eight DSL ports with just two chips. Very low power requirements help keep power dissipation to below 600 mwatts per port.

Another significant advantage of CopperLite is that its analog chip integrates most of the external filtering (hybrid) typically required by other ADSL chipsets, thereby reducing the normal hybrid-component count by half.

FlowPoint/Cabletron SmartSwitch Router

The FlowPoint/Cabletron SmartSwitch Router (SSR255) supports both the consumer-focused universal Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line standard (ADSL-G.lite) as well as the full-rate standard (ADSL-G.dmt). The SSR255 router provides Network Service Providers, Internet Service Providers, and end users with a wide range of broadband access options.

It utilizes Alcatel's DynaMiTe DMT ADSL Issue 2-compliant chipset and firmware for modem-side functionality. This ensures full interoperability between the Cabletron router and carrier-class DSLAM equipment from multiple vendors, including Alcatel, Cisco, Ericsson, NEC, Nortel, and Siemens.
