GO,
From your post """"These alliances between cell phone companies allow them to do now what Iridium had attempted to do. Now the question is, how many people need phone coverage in the Himalayas?" Miller says. """
GSTRF isn't about the Himalayas, its about the vast area of the US, Canada, and Europe, and the rest of the world that will never have coverage because it's not economical to provide a tower for a small area. Drive into the city some morning and try to keep your cell phone connected for the ride. One area without coverage has a tower clearly in view but no service. Having just returned to the US from a populated country with many small cities 25 to 50 km apart I can tell you there is a huge part of the planet without coverage. Sure, those areas between cities don't have enough resident population to demand service but the highways between them are crowded with travelers that want to be connected. A recent article in the NYT detailed twelve gaps from 20 miles upstate to the city.
