Japan 2 Standards>> September 27, 1999 Japan Govt Panel Advises 2 Standards For New Cell Phones TOKYO -- A Japanese government advisory panel recommended Monday that the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications adopt two standards for next-generation cell-phone technology. The panel recommended that both the Japan-Europe standard, promoted by Japan's largest cell-phone carrier NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc.(J.NTX or 9437), commonly known as NTT DoCoMo, and a U.S. standard supported by U.S. companies Motorola Inc.(MOT) and Qualcomm Inc.(QCOM) be accepted as technical standards in Japan. Next-generation cell-phone technology will enable users to smoothly receive and send moving images via mobile handsets. The new technology will also enable carriers to offer full international dialing services. Once the Posts Ministry accepts these recommendations for technical standards, it will field applications for operating licenses. NTT DoCoMo, which is expected to receive one of three licenses issued by the ministry for third-generation services in Japan, plans to be the world's first provider of such services with a planned roll-out in spring 2001. "This recommendation was expected," commented Makio Inui, a telecommunications analyst at Saloman Smith Barney. The advisory panel also forecast that by 2010, 65% of an estimated 81 million cell-phone subscribers in Japan will be using next-generation hand-sets. Adoption of the new technology is expected to generate a market worth some Y42 trillion from areas including infrastructure development, handset manufacture and user charges. It will also support the employment of 568,000 people by 2010, the panel said. Briefing Book for: J.NTX | MOT | QCOM
