Actually, I think the hard drive companies are the ones who spend more time trying to extend the ATA interface. Then they spend a lot of time trying to get Intel to agree to make it the new standard. The friend I've mentioned who works at the HD company has his name on the patent for one of the more recent versions of ATA (not sure which one).
