Study says 8VSB decoders will out sell Cable/DBS by 2003. Well maybe...........................www2.digitalbroadcasting.com {C9A31CEA-70F6-11D3-9A64-00A0C9C83AFB}&Bucket=HomeLatestHeadlines New Study Bullish on 8VSB Technology; Calls Reports of Standard?s Demise 'Premature' 9/27/99 A new report predicts that the growth of 8-VSB terrestrial set-top boxes will out-pace the sale of digital cable tuners by 2002 and surpass shipments of DBS decoders by 2003. Cahner?s In-Stat Group (Scottsdale, AZ) expects that by the end of 2000, more than 50 million US households will be capable of receiving an 8-VSB signal from local terrestrial DTV stations. According to the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association?s (CEMA) latest figures, however, only about 25,000 HD-capable sets have been sold in the US since the sets were launched on the market in the summer of 1998. Still, the report is bullish on the ATSC 8-VSB modulation standard, which has come under fire over the past year in the US for its antenna reception capabilities. ?Many industry watchers believe that the ATSC 8-VSB digital television standard is on the verge of collapsing,? says Gerry Kaufhold, principal analyst with Cahners. ?They?re wrong because they haven?t looked far enough. 8-VSB will be a viable new technology for digital television and its growth will be strong.? Kaufhold believes new technology from Philips, Motorola, and NxtWave will help revive 8-VSB technology, and that 8-VSB tuners for PCs will be the early market driver, hitting price points below $300 retail by next year. He also estimates that while the overall market for the tuners will start slowly, shipments will pick up, hitting 11 million units by 2002. The report also says beyond 2002, the satellite broadcasting market will drive the 8-VSB market due to DBS providers? access to local DTV signals. The report, ?ATSC Digital Tuners: 8-VSB Tunes in the World,? provides a 12-year forecast for nine separate products that will likely contain ATSC 8-VSB tuners and details annual shipment forecasts for tuners and demodulators in six countries.
