Novell launches directory-based free
e-mail

By Jana Sanchez
IDG News Service, 09/27/99

Novell has launched a free
Web-based e-mail service based
on Novel Directory Services, called myrealbox.com.

Myrealbox is a Novell-sponsored site that will offer
free e-mail, based on Novell technologies, including
NDS and Novell Internet Messaging System, Novell
says.

The service will not be accompanied by advertising or
marketing campaigns, according to the company. The
site is not designed to make a profit. Its' purpose is to
demonstrate Novell's technologies on the Web.

Directory services provide information about users on
a network. It is like an electronic phone book that lets
users find other users and services on the network.

Eric Schmidt, Novell's CEO, has been pushing the
value of directories on the Internet, saying they
improve security for electronic commerce.

Novell, in Provo, Utah, can be reached at
801-222-6000.

:))

Looks like the media smoked the "MYREALBOX" free email service out of its beta hole.

Turns out that PCWeek forced NOVL to put this beta free email service into production before they were ready. I have to give this team a ton of credit because instead of simply locking down the website with a notice that its not ready, they decided to let the hords in and just live through some rough days. They felt the PR of a closed service from the recommendation of the media would not be good.

They are getting a TON of suggestions for improvements and the team is actually putting the improvements in! They put in my suggestion for the "SEND" button location already and they are investigating the BorderManager issue.

He also agrees that the name is not that great and asked for suggestions - after all the name is a beta product name. They must be reading our postings because he said that he felt the free email should have ties to the Digital-Me service. BANG-ON !!

I told him that although the domain name is a bit long, I personally thought user@digitalme.com has much more merits than the small problem of a long name (afterall, look at user@netscape.net - whats one more letter).

They are also realizing a few other features that internal marketing and others said the public wouldn't want - our suggestions are proving otherwise.

GREAT WORK! I have even more respect for them now that I know the situation they have been put in.
