The reporting services don't even agree on what the consensus estimate is for the company. First Call is reporting a consensus estimate of a $0.17 loss; Zacks is reporting a consensus estimate of a $0.31 loss; and Multex is reporting a consensus estimate of a $0.12 loss. The main reason for the discrepancies is that CMGI sold nearly $750 million in assets recently and many analysts have not updated their earnings. What is more confusing is that last Tuesday, two analysts issued a report and both suggested completely different quarterly earnings. Peggy Ledvina at Dain Rauscher Wessels estimated CMGI to report a quarterly loss of $0.41 while Michael Graham at BancBoston Robertson Stephens estimated the company to report a gain of $4.05. Mr. Graham was not the only one that reported much higher earnings expectations last week – Ullas Naik at FAC/Equities suggested the company would gain $4.03 for the quarter and others gave unofficial estimate increases on Thursday and Friday. We've had an Earnings Whisper number of a $0.31 for several weeks and, according to Zacks, the consensus estimate has dropped from $0.28 to our whisper number. However, our number came in before a lot of the news last week and the revised estimates. Analysts are guessing that the asset sale will add nearly $4.50 per share to the bottom line, which makes the Earnings Whisper number come to $4.20. You may listen to CMGI's conference call at 5:30 PM EST today at cmgi.com . The consensus estimate for Micron Electronics (MUEI) is $0.08, but our Earnings Whisper number is $0.09 and recent expectations have been $0.10, so the expectation is for the company to surprise by at least a penny and possibly two. The analysts lowered their estimates right after the company reported earnings last quarter a penny ahead of the consensus estimates but inline with the Earnings Whisper number. Donald Young at PaineWebber recently said that the companies fundamentals have turned around and expects earnings of $0.10. You may listen to Micron Electronics conference call beginning 5:00 PM EST today at nasdaq-amex.com . Micron Technology (MU), which owns 64% of Micron Electronics, is expected to report earnings after the bell next Monday and is also expected to come in above the consensus estimate of a $0.17 loss. DRAM prices have had a sizable gain lately, which have lead to the increased expectations. When most estimates that make up the consensus were formed, DRAM prices were hovering around $5.00 each and towards the end of the quarter, prices had risen over 15%. Jonathan J. Joseph at Salomon Smith Barney, John Lazlo at PaineWebber, and Mona Eraiba at Gruntal & Co. all think the consensus is too low. Analysts at Merrill Lynch have downgraded Walgreen (WAG) recently due to competition from pharmacy-by-mail companies, but don't be surprised if Walgreen skips past estimates when it reports earnings on Tuesday. Due to exceptional strength in the retail sector and extremely high consumer spending, Walgreen could beat estimates of 16 cents by a penny, according to recent analyst comments. The company has been in an exceptionally strong growth mode, building several new Walgreen over the past few months. In fact, Walgreen has added well over 100 new stores just during the course of the summer. Slower sales and increased competition has been the main reason analysts have been lowering their expectation for The Finish Line (FINL). The estimates have decreased from $0.34 to $0.31 and we've recently lowered the Earnings Whisper number to $0.30 amid comments from Robert Ohmes at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and others. Look for revenues of $165 million. ---------------------------------------------- RMBS still trading down...58 7/8 I may pick some up 58-52 I've always done well in that range.
