RT..WECA..no, not WICA..<gg> NEW YORK (AP) -- Lucent Technologies (LU: news, msgs), Nokia (NOK: news, msgs) and 3Com (COMS: news, msgs) are helping found a new industry group that will adopt standards for wireless computer networks and certify products that meet those standards. The Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance, WECA, hopes to make go-anywhere computing as commonplace as using a mobile phone by making it less of a gamble for consumers and network operators to invest in expensive wireless equipment. While users of laptop computers and other portable devices can already dial-up to the Internet and private company networks with a wireless modem, the connections are often slow and unreliable from location to location. The industry envisions a more robust, dependable link with local wireless networks deployed everywhere -- airports, parks, highways, homes -- like the cellular "pods" that provide continuous mobile phone service as a person travels. ========================================== Compaq Seeking Ally For Wireless-Linked Devices PARIS (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news), the world's No. 1 personal computer maker, is gearing up for a complete redefinition of the PC and working on alliances to produce simpler, redesigned devices with wireless links, its chief executive said Monday. ''Our goal should be to build really cool stuff,'' Michael Capellas, the U.S. computer maker's newly hired president and chief executive, told a news briefing as he completed a European tour aimed at outlining strategy for the company. ''The new wave says how do we make these machines simpler and simpler -- with specialized functions. Wireless connectivity becomes the actual baseline,'' he said. Asked if this focus meant fresh alliances, he said: ''You can assume we are aggressively pursuing that, and no, I won't say who.'' He added that Compaq aimed to have established ''close relations with somebody before the end of the year." =============================== Just some musings...no basis in fact...LU + TI + CPQ + EDIG could = a "really cool" wireless device.
