Compaq Announces Availability of Latest-Technology Deskpro PCs and DVD-ROM Drives

Offers New Models With Intel 810e Chipset
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 1999--Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ - news), the world's leading vendor of client PCs engineered for the enterprise, announced availability of new Intel Pentium® III Deskpro EP Series and Deskpro EN Series Small Form Factor models featuring the 810e chipset from Intel.

The new Deskpro EP Series and Deskpro EN Series Small Form Factor models support both the current 100 MHz front-side bus and the 133 MHz front-side bus that will be used with next-generation Pentium III technology coming later this year. Standard Deskpro EP Series and Deskpro EN Series Small Form Factor models feature 500 or 450 MHz Pentium III processors, integrated Intel Direct AGP 3D graphics, integrated audio, 6.4 GB Ultra ATA 66 hard drives, 64 MB RAM, 40X Max CD-ROM drives(1), a 17-inch S700 monitor (15.7-inch viewable), and a dual install of Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows 98. Prices start at $1,239 for the Deskpro EP Series and $1,309 for the Deskpro EN Series Small Form Factor, with availability in the first week of October 1999(2).

The Compaq 10X DVD-ROM uses the latest DVD technology to boost speeds of up to 13,500 Kb/s, or 10 times the standard transfer rate. The drive also reads CD-ROM data at speeds of up to 40X (2,550 to 6,000 Kb/s data transfer rate) and takes full advantage of DVD's enhanced features while preserving compatibility with conventional CD-ROM, CD-DA discs, and CD-R/RW media.
The Compaq 6X Slimline DVD-ROM is the first slimline DVD drive for the Deskpro EN Series Small Form Factor. It incorporates the latest slimline technology, with data transfer rates up to 8,100 Kb/s (6X) and CD-ROM transfer rates of up to 3,600 Kb/s (24X).
