Monday September 27, 4:34 pm Eastern Time Company Press Release Corriente Resources Announces Rio Tinto to Drill Exotic Copper Target, Taca-Taca, Argentina VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 1999-- (TSE:CTQ. - news) An option agreement has been signed with Rio Tinto to allow exploration to proceed in the Salar Arizaro area of the Taca-Taca project, Argentina. The terms of the option agreement call for Rio Tinto to spend $2,500,000 U.S. on exploration by July, 2004 to earn a 60% interest. The target of the exploration drilling will be exotic copper mineralization, which is interpreted to have flowed outward from the leached cap of Taca-Taca along topographic lows. A recently completed gravity survey has outlined a prominent channel under the salar (salt lake) beside Taca-Taca. Rio Tinto drilling will be focused on this channel and is expected to start in October. Subsequent to the previously announced Company calculations on missing copper, outlined in the November 19th 1998 news release, independent work by T. Mote at UC Berkeley under the direction of G. Brimhall, has indicated that up to 3.5 Billion pounds of copper is missing. Results have been received from the seven hole reverse circulation drill program carried out by Rio Tinto on the Cerro Cobre target at the Taca-Taca copper-gold porphyry project in Argentina. At least three of the holes have outlined a near surface zone of secondary copper mineralization (mostly chalcocite), with significant gold values. No substantial, near surface copper mineralization was found in the remaining holes; holes CCR-2 and 5 are vertical, hole CCR-6 is -80 degrees. Hole From To Width(m) Copper(%) Gold(g/t) CCR-002 0 78 78 0.45 - CCR-002 0 66 66 - 0.58 CCR-005 28 58 30 0.57 - CCR-005 0 56 56 - 0.30 CCR-006 28 98 70 0.35 - CCR-006 0 116 116 - 0.16 The interpretation of the above intersections is that the central part of Taca-Taca has a preserved blanket of secondary copper that is near surface and lies well above the deep copper mineralization as outlined by BHP (see press release, July 9/98). Possible dimensions of the area with the shallow copper-gold mineralization as defined by holes CCR-2, 5 and 6 are 750 metres X 300 metres. Rio Tinto has decided that this secondary copper target does not meet their size requirements and will focus exploration on the Salar target. Kenneth R.
