Well, is it unfair of me to suspect that the sponsors of the Gulag might have sinister motives? They held Jaruselski's feet to the fire, so that if he had not cracked down, the Warsaw Pact would have invaded Poland in "socialist solidarity" to put down the first stirrings of political pluralism: was that not sinister? Most of the same people participated in empowering reform in Russia (hell, many of the same people who were responsible for removing Dubcek from Czechoslavakia, or their proteges), and so yes, I suspect that a lot of the reason was political. Even if Gorbachev were pretty sincere, he was Premier on the sufferance of the Politburo....
