Lucent Adds Speech Recognition
To Messaging
(09/27/99, 4:24 p.m. ET)
By David Drucker, InternetWeek

Lucent Technologies on Monday added
speech-recognition capabilities to its Intuity
Audix unified messaging system.

Lucent Voice Director will enable voice dialing and
addressing of messages on the voice mail system, as
well as access Intuity Audix's unified messaging
features.

Officials said the voice dialing and addressing will add
significant ease of use to voice systems and take the
load off of operators. They said it requires minimal
setup, with a CD-ROM that automatically configures
Voice Director into the Intuity Audix system, and that it
requires little additional administration.

The company said it will utilize the speech-recognition
capability as it expands Intuity Audix's unified
messaging features. The Intuity Audix system is
primarily used for voice messaging, but is designed to
handle and combine various communication forms. It
lets users attach e-mail or faxes to voice messages,
listen to speech translations of e-mail messages, and the
speech-recognition capability can be used to forward
attachments to other users.

Lucent Voice Director is available and requires release
5.0 of the Intuity Audix system. Pricing for Lucent
Voice Director is $3,000 per system for a 5,000-user
directory, and $6,000 per system for a 20,000-user
directory.
