Assuming you're not joking, Charles, (sorry if I'm being dense here), if it's the guy who was heading up Star Division, that's an extraordinarily bad move. What kind of industry connections does he have? Answer: he's probably never even met anybody who didn't have an open pizza box with a bunch of moldy gnawed crusts in it on the floor next to them. The guy who heads up Sun's software at this extremely critical juncture has to be a player, a thinker, and a politician par excellence, not just a guy who can give away German error messages for free.

Holding my breath,

Charles, you are witty this morning. Did Balmer lose his job? I wouldn't want him for a company President either. A President is suppose to be a leader; not a loser.

When it's time for the battle, when the going gets tough, I imagine Balmer would stand at the top of the hill wave the white flag inked with the words: I surrender. MSFT's shares cost too much. Then, he would retreat and worry about the competition and maybe the Justice Department. If he can knock MSFT's share price down NOW, maybe it won't fall so hard later on.
