Company Press Release
ARIS Technologies to Make SDMI-Compliant Software Development Kits Available Immediately
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 1999--ARIS Technologies, Inc., the company that has been selected by the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) to provide the audio watermarking technology for the Phase 1 screen for SDMI-compliant portable music devices and products, announced this afternoon that, effective tomorrow, it will make SDMI-compliant Software Development Kits available to companies that are developing such SDMI-compliant products.

The announcement means that companies that are in the process of developing SDMI-compliant portable devices and products in time for the 1999 holiday season may immediately begin work on incorporating the ``Phase 1' screen for use with their products. Software Development Kits give companies access to the technology needed for these new products, but do not grant them the legal right to sell or otherwise distribute merchandise using that technology.

``There has been significant demand from manufacturers who want to produce SDMI-compliant products,' said David Leibowitz, President of ARIS Technologies. ``By making ARIS Software Development Kits available as early as tomorrow, companies can work towards delivering SDMI-compliant portable devices and products in time for the 1999 holiday season. ARIS is pleased to have been selected by SDMI as the technology provider for the Phase 1 Screen and is committed to working with SDMI and the industries to meet the needs of interested companies.'

ARIS Technologies Inc. is a privately held company, headquartered in Cambridge, MA, and has been pioneering in the field of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) since 1995. Its award-winning, patented and patent-pending audio watermarking technology enables new and expanded applications in almost every field involving sound. ARIS recently announced its intention to merge with Solana Technology Development Corporation, another leader in audio watermarking technologies and related business information systems for the entertainment, broadcast and on-line industries. More information about the ARIS and its digital audio watermarking technology is available at aristech.com .

About the Phase One Screen:

SDMI has identified the ARIS audio watermarking technology to indicate when the software used by initial, or Phase I, SDMI-compliant portable devices should be upgraded to incorporate Phase II technology. Until that time, all music compatible with a particular device will be playable, whether the music is in a protected or unprotected format. When Phase II technology is ready, detection of the watermark will automatically let consumers know that their software can be upgraded to play new music releases. If a consumer chooses not to upgrade, the device will not play new music releases that incorporate SDMI technology. Upgraded SDMI-compliant portable devices will continue to play existing music as well as future unprotected files and new music released with SDMI technology.
