NEC says to double DRAM output in Shanghai
SHANGHAI, Sept 28 (Reuters) - NEC Corp said on Tuesday it would double output of 64 mb Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) chips at its new Shanghai plant to 10,000 wafers per month from November and to 20,000 per month by the end of next year.

NEC held a formal opening ceremony for a joint venture plant that it said was China's largest semiconductor factory. The plant began DRAM production ahead of schedule in February, turning out 5,000 wafers per month, NEC said in a statement.

''The recovery of the DRAM market and NEC's plans to strengthen its DRAM production capability mean that this figure will be expanded to 10,000 wafers per month from November,'' the statement said.

''Steady expansion of capacity is expected to continue, reaching 20,000 wafers pre month by the end of the year 2000,'' it said.

NEC's venture, Shanghai Hua Hong NEC Electronics Co, expects to achieve an accumulated production volume of 5.0 million 64 mb DRAM chips by the end of this month it said.

The joint venture in Shanghai's Pudong industrial zone is 71.4 percent owned by Shanghai Hua Hong Group, with NEC Corp holding 18.6 percent and NEC (China) Co holding the remaining 10 percent, it said.

China has been trying to build up its semiconductor manufacturing capacity, and the Shanghai Hua Hong plant is a key part of that programme, also known as the 909 Project.
