Portal? How about a Bazaar? People tend to make comparision between networks, railways, etc. This thing is not about technologies. I think not in terms of technologies or -Oh Boy! Solutions- I think in terms of a souk or a Bazaar. Everyone, who have something to trade, pile up the goods right where the people walk and start buying and selling. We've been doing that kind of stuff for -4.000 years?- anyway for a long time. We are just improving that way of supplying the demand. We are just doing it with more "grease", with less generation of heat, with better efficiency. We need "short circuits". This is an era of disinflation. We have to have less friction when we go to the market and do trade. Remember when our ancestors left the landlord and came to burgh and became traders and artisans and eventually burgois? With the next next generation networks we'll do the next jump.
