JC; thanks for explaining the above ?... "Wind River Systems Creates Center of Excellence Initiative For Tighter Integration with Key Microprocessor Vendors, Faster Embedded Development
Business Wire - September 28, 1999 08:20
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1999--Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), the leader in embedded development software and services, today announced the Wind River Center of Excellence, a new strategic hardware/software initiative to expand Wind River's existing relationships with the key companies building microprocessors for embedded applications. Through the center of excellence initiative, Wind River will partner on a one-on-one basis with major microprocessor vendors to jointly engineer and market optimized solutions based on Wind River's industry-leading software, including the Tornado(TM) development platform and VxWorks(R) real-time operating system (RTOS). This collaboration will allow embedded developers to derive maximum benefit from the newest features included in today's increasingly complex hardware and software--effectively reducing their time-to-market. (Please see separate Wind River/Intel press release today, Wind River/Intel Center of Excellence.)

Key facets of the initiative include individual centers of excellence for each microprocessor partner, with creation of a joint steering committee for each one comprised of representatives from Wind River and the partner company. The steering committee provides the two companies with significant insight into each other's product development and deployment plans. Another feature of the Wind River Center of Excellence model is the creation of a team of engineers within each organization dedicated to implementation and deployment of new products. This coordination will ensure that, when new microprocessors are introduced, compatible application development software will be ready for use by developers early in the processor life cycle.

"Wind River software already supports the widest range of microprocessors on the market and now we have the ability to form even stronger ties to our key microprocessor vendors," said Jerry Fiddler, co-founder and chairman of Wind River Systems. "This represents a tremendous value to embedded developers. It increases their ability to quickly create sophisticated, next-generation products with more features than ever before. It also enables developers to focus on the piece of the puzzle they do best."

Non-PC embedded applications are growing tremendously because of the increased connectivity offered by the Internet. Developers in high-growth market segments, such as Internet infrastructure, Internet appliances, and digital imaging, are building increasingly complex products under greater time-to-market and cost-reduction pressures. To meet these competing demands, developers need high performance reliable hardware and software building blocks upon which they can easily add their own expertise.

Wind River's Embedded Leadership

Wind River created the Center of Excellence as another step in its historical role as the leader in embedded technology. Throughout its 18-year history, Wind River has consistently set the direction of the real-time market--pioneering the technologies that ultimately became industry standards. Examples of Wind River leadership which furthered the state-of-the-art of embedded technology include:

- First integrated real-time cross-development environment with industry standard networking (VxWorks RTOS)

- First graphical data visualizer for embedded applications (StethoScope software tool)

- First graphical system visualizer for embedded applications (WindView(TM) software tool)

- First development system to provide a framework for using all types of tools, regardless of target resources (Tornado development platform)

- First customized solution for I2O-compliant intelligent I/O (IxWorks(R) operating system)

- First embedded software company to pass Designed for Windows NT(TM) 4.0 logo test

- First embedded software company to certify full Java(TM) technology compatibility for an RTOS

- First online resume program connecting prospective employers to recent college graduates specializing in embedded software (GRAD Program)

- First integrated application development platform with a built-in simulator (Tornado II platform)

Wind River Systems, GoAhead Software Simplify Field Upgrades for Internet Appliances, Network Devices
Business Wire - September 28, 1999 08:18
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1999--

Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Solution Now Gives OEMs Cost-Effective Alternative to Building Proprietary Systems

Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), the leader in embedded development software and services for the post-PC era, and GoAhead(R) Software, the leading developer of management software for communications infrastructure and Internet appliances, announced today that GoAhead FieldUpgrader(TM) 2.1 will be available from Wind River. Certified compatible with Wind River's Tornado(TM) development platform, GoAhead FieldUpgrader gives Internet appliance and network infrastructure manufacturers a simple and cost-effective way to automatically upgrade any device built with Wind River's Tornado and VxWorks software.

Dynamic field upgrading software automatically searches out and pulls down updates to an Internet-enabled device's software or firmware - no recall of software or end user action is required. To update their devices with the latest features even after they are sold to end users, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have traditionally created their own software upgrading systems. Commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) field upgrading software gives OEMs a cost-effective alternative to investing the time and associated development costs of building their own solutions.

With GoAhead FieldUpgrader, OEMs get the added value of an upgrading solution designed specifically for products built with Wind River's market-share leading development software. Ideal for Internet-enabled devices such as office equipment or consumer products as well as networking environments such as switches and routers, GoAhead FieldUpgrader is the only secure, COTS remote upgrading software available. It is also certified Tornado-compatible by Wind River, reducing the time developers spend on integration and helping them deliver their products to market faster.

"Internet-enabled embedded devices often have no provision for providing software upgrades and building proprietary systems can be expensive," said Curt Schacker, vice president of marketing at Wind River Systems. "In addition, they are often sold in high volume through third party resellers, making them difficult to track. A dynamic upgrading solution resolves these issues while also significantly enhancing the end user's experience by regularly giving them new features. Because so many Internet devices today are made with Wind River software, a Tornado-certified edition of GoAhead FieldUpgrader gives OEMs and end users a great solution."

"Teaming with market leader Wind River allows GoAhead Software to help thousands of VxWorks customers reduce their support costs and differentiate their products by providing a live connection to devices and appliances via the Internet," said Michael O'Brien, chief executive officer of GoAhead.

Dynamic Upgrading Made Simple

GoAhead FieldUpgrader enables devices to periodically "phone home" to an upgrade server via the Internet. The devices can then be remotely updated with the latest software upgrades at anytime and anyplace. GoAhead FieldUpgrader eliminates the need for users to call tech support lines to receive assistance on upgrades, have a technician come out to upgrade the software inside their devices, or even be aware that an upgrade has taken place. In addition to scalability to millions of devices, the product includes a Web-based development environment and wizard-like tools to enable manufacturers to rapidly develop and deploy self-upgrading devices.

The company leverages Internet standards to address the problem of managing devices and appliances from a unique orientation -- from inside the device. GoAhead's solutions enable manufacturers to reduce or eliminate the need for costly and ineffective external management and support by using the intelligence resident in the device or appliance to internally manage faults and upgrades. The privately held company was formed in 1995 and is headquartered in Bellevue, Washington.

There have been such a volume of announcements recently that it is difficult to keep track of. Many of them seem very promising, such as IXA, DCOM, other ventures with Intel. Some of them probably do not amount to much in terms of potential revenues. Wind itself seems to be getting pervasive, just like embedded systems. All this must bode well for the future - yet the stock is dipping this week. Right now I am craving for an Allen Benn write-up on all the happenings since he last wrote on this thread and the general direction (and magnitude) of things to expect in the future. This might keep my head from spinning. I am sure even Mark Brophy will enjoy such an article, even if only for its literary content or for the purposes of bashing it.
