COMEX Dec gold hits 6-1/2-month high, over $300/oz
NEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters) - COMEX gold futures shot to their highest level since March 12 on Tuesday morning, with December delivery breaching $300 an ounce amid more panicky buying on the heels of Sunday's announcement of a sales moratorium by European central banks.

``The market is extremely nervous,' said Don Tierney, of Pell Brothers Trading. ``There is some selling around but it looks like there is some general public buying.'

At 0925 EDT, December gold was up $22.40 at $306.20 an ounce, near its morning peak of $306.50.

Bullion prices were also screaming toward the pshychological $300 an ounce level, hitting their highest since mid-October on options-related buying, short covering and mine hedge reversals.

Tuesday's rally almost matched to Monday's 6 percent bullion gain -- the biggest daily surge in 17 years. Prices have rocketed more than 17 percent since last Tuesday's well-received UK sale of reserve metal got the ball rolling.

Additional bullishness was fanned by the announcement Sunday that 15 European central banks, including the Bank of England, would limit annual gold sales to 400 tonnes for five years, removing the key element of bearish sentiment, which had pushed prices to 20-year lows this summer.
