Personal Computer Sales Surge on Unexpected New Uses, WSJ Says

Round Rock, Texas, Sept. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Dell Computer Corp., Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell NEC Inc. are among the personal computer makers seeing an unexpected surge in sales, as consumers are using them as stereos, recording studios, high-tech photo albums and other types of entertainment centers, the Wall Street Journal said. Packard Bell NEC's machines comes with software that allows for downloading and converting MP3 music files from the Internet to compact discs that can be played in a car stereo, and Dell's advertisements boast its latest PC may replace the stereo. Dell's chief executive, Michael Dell, said ''it starts with audio,'' adding that ''video is certainly coming,'' the Journal reported.

Fourth-quarter PC sales are expected to rise 21 percent, International Data Corp. said.
