Dell seeks to grow home-office market

Dell Computer Corp., which sells mostly to business customers, wants to do more to target home and small office computer users, a company executive said Tuesday.

"Home and office is 30 percent of Dell's business," said Tom Meredith, Dell's chief financial officer, at the Banc of America Securities conference in San Francisco. " We are underrepresented: its a great opportunity for us."

Dell (DELL: news, msgs) continues to try to do more of its business online, Meredith said. To that effect, 30 suppliers account for 90 percent of Dell's components used in making computers, and most of the 30 conduct business with Dell online.

"There's not a company that's even close to us, not even Cisco, in terms of e-commerce. We are are the largest e-commerce company on the face of the earth today."

Meredith added that Dell can take care of 40 percent of its first-time customer support calls over the Internet.

Meredith said that some believe Dell eventually may become one of the nation's top 50 companies, up from its current ranking of 78.
