SUN MICROSYSTEMS APPOINTS PATRICIA SUELTZ AS NEW SOFTWARE PRODUCTS AND PLATFORMS PRESIDENT

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Sept. 28, 1999 -- Sun Microsystems today announced that Patricia C. (Pat) Sueltz, formerly General Manager of IBM's Java (TM)) Software division, has been appointed President of Sun's Software Products and Platforms division. Effective today, Sueltz will report directly to Ed Zander, President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Sun. Jon Kannegaard, who has been acting in the role, will resume his role as vice president and general manager of the Java products and technologies group.

In her new role, Sueltz is responsible for overseeing Sun's software businesses, including the Solaris Software, Consumer/Embedded and Java Software groups. She will also have responsibility for all Solaris (TM) operating environment and Java technology-based tools and developer products, security products, software marketing, software technology OEM sales group and the ISV/developer relations and market development group.

"Pat has an extensive background in general management and vast experience as an impactful 'heavy hitter" in the software industry," said Ed Zander, President and COO of Sun. "She brings that, and her invaluable first-hand experience as a partner who was instrumental to Java technologies' success to her new position at Sun. Her dedication to the open standards cause, broad understanding of customers' needs and 20 years of high-tech and software business expertise will enable us to further our leadership position in providing enterprise-class Internet infrastructure and e-commerce products."

Prior to joining Sun, Sueltz was the point person for IBM's extensive Java technology-based marketing and development activities including leading IBM's strategies for Java technology and XML across IBM's software, hardware and services businesses. She directed many facets of IBM's strategic alliances with other major high-technology companies, including Sun and was a member of IBM's senior management team.

Sueltz is a seasoned industry veteran with a broad knowledge of the software industry. She joined IBM in 1979 and held a variety of product management, technical and executive management positions, including vice president of Internet Software in IBM's Internet division. There, she directed the creation and implementation of IBM's e-business web server products. She has also served as technical assistant to IBM's Chairman Lou Gerstner, which provided her with broad insight into the concerns of customers and the opportunity to work closely with IBM's teams around the world to improve the company's responsiveness. In 1991, Sueltz directed an 800-person development and product marketing organization for the CICS and MQSeries families of online transaction and message-queuing products. She also managed IBM's OS/2 operating system products.

Prior to joining IBM, Sueltz held various responsibilities in the Installation and Repair division of Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif. Sueltz is active in professional women's organizations, including Women in Technology International and IBM's Women's Diversity Taskforce.
