Some problems decrease as pipes become infinitely fast. But with all the different devices we need locally, do we still run into device driver problems? If we finally get to a world where we have exactly one very fast peripheral interface (e.g., firewire2 or whatever), so with only one little connector on the SunRay we can read data from any of our scanners, cameras, video and music sources etc., render on the server and then write data back out locally to DV tape (or whatever replaces it) while concurrently displaying the rendered result on the tube, and we are able to handle this very high-bandwidth (multi-megabyte per second) data stream, demultiplexing it and stashing it correctly on the server end without dropping any frames etc., then what you say will be possible.

But I think that requires

a) A rather more complex leaf device than this initial SunRay
b) More agreement on I/O standards and more device uniformity
c) Some new I/O devices have to be invented
d) Much, much, much more bandwidth
e) Some evolution of media-manipulation applications to deal with a distributed environment
f) Probably a lot of other things.

So I don't think your train of thought is off the tracks...it's just not going to get here within the next several years IMHO.
