What a difference a few minutes makes. The shorts started covering.

MARKET NEWS: U.S. stocks ended lower but well off the day's lows
as bargain hunting and a short-covering rally lifted the market
dramatically in the last hour of trading. The Dow Jones industrial
average closed off 27.86 points at 10,275.53, unwinding the vast
majority of losses the blue chip benchmark had suffered by early
afternoon. The NASDAQ closed off 5.48 points at 2,756. The
Standard and Poor's 500 index fell 1.11 points or 1,282.20. Gold
rallied dramatically for a second straight day, with the most
active contract, for December delivery, rising $26.20 per ounce --
nearly a two year high for the yellow metal. Analysts said that
the late buying in stocks may mean the market is close to finding
its footing after falling sharply in recent weeks. See
