Malcolm, I think what you say makes sense in the traditional way of valuing investments.

My top 10 reasons to invest in etrade (a bit tongue in cheek)
1.etrade has an e in it and a great PR machine
2.losing money commands higher short-term market caps for ebusinesses
3.DLJ was the first to offer pc-based trading but they are not held in the same ebusiness regard as etrade
4. etrade fits in with 9984's vortal of insurance, loans, trading, but others do not have a fortal (financial portal) strategy
5.Nomura, Nikko may have the brand names the older generation loves but in embracing the internet, consumers and investors look for new brands
6.as a customer of etrade, I can say they have lousy service (just like dell) and, you know what, good customer service doesn't pay dividends for shareholders
7. etrade is from silicon valley (Ameritrade is from Nebraska, DLJ from NJ, Waterhouse from Toronto)
8. etrade is venture-backed (DLG, Ameritrade, Scottrade, Waterhouse are not)
9. Chris Costakos is a workaholic and ex war vet.

and my number 10 reason:
10 etrade pays good United miles (gotta love them affinity programs)
