Oh yeah, I couldn't believe it either, but heard the commentary on "Fresh Air", at which point I decided to buy the book (but haven't had time to read). The author mentioned that he discovered this sentiment after the cold war was over and he was travelling home on a Russian plane. He chanced to see his nemesis on the plane and decided to engage in a conversation with this man who he was always curious about on a personal level... apparently the spies have an inherent respect for all in the profession. I'm sure it isn't a common view shared among the general populace, he also stated that he discovered his own extreme paranoia only after leaving the profession behind... How many times have you travelled to Russia thus far? I didn't realize you were familiar with the region.
