Sept. 28/99: Nortel Networks Demonstrate 3G Mobile-to-Mobile Video using live W-CDMAnortelnetworks.com PARIS - Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT] has successfully demonstrated mobile-to-mobile video calls using a live W-CDMA third generation (3G) network to connect pocket-sized mobile video phones from Panasonic*. "Today's demonstration is a result of our leadership position in IP and wireless technology and of the success of our partnership with Panasonic." said John O'Connell, general manager, Wireless Solutions, Nortel Networks. The calls featured pre-production Panasonic phones representative of the expected 'look and feel' of early 3G mobile devices. Users would instantly recognize these mobile video phones as actual consumer devices, not prototypes. They feature built-in cameras that can be rotated, and color video screens the same size as current video camera screens. The calls took place at the Nortel Networks Wireless Internet development center in Paris. Nortel Networks and Panasonic plan to repeat this live mobile-to-mobile video demonstration in October at Telecom '99 in Geneva. "Wireless Internet is all about the delivery of new packet based applications through both existing and future mobile networks," O'Connell said. "It will enable wireless operators to rapidly move from providing primarily voice services today to putting the net in your pocket, and at radically reduced operating costs." Nortel Networks has previously announced trials or demonstrations of 3G radio technology (UMTS, cdma2000*) in collaboration with Microcell and the North American GSM Alliance in Canada; BT (British Telecom) in the UK; France Telecom in France; Telstra in Australia; and Sprint PCS and AirTouch in the US. In addition to the recent mobile-to-mobile video calls, Nortel Networks and Panasonic have also demonstrated wireless streaming video from the Internet to laptop computers at 64 kbps, and point-to-point fixed wireless video conferencing at 384 kbps. Nortel Networks and Panasonic formed an alliance last year to develop 3G wireless voice and data solutions. Nortel Networks delivers value to customers around the world through Unified Networks* solutions, spanning mission-critical telephony and IP-optimized networks.
