Squelching Chip Flames
Executive Briefing
September 28, 1999
by Sylvia Carr

Get-Rich Tip: Keep a lid on bad news. Rambus couldn't stop the flow of disappointing news Monday and saw its stock slip 17 percent, following a heart-wrenching 27 percent drop Friday. Monday Rambus (RMBS) hit the fan when Intel confirmed suspicions that it would delay the launch of its 820 chipset, which uses Rambus technology, because of technology bugs. Thus, PCs with the Rambus wouldn't likely come out in October as expected. Analyst fallout was unpretty, as Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, SG Cowen and BancBoston Robertson Stephens all downgraded the stock. Further messing up matters, IBM is expected to say Tuesday that it's choosing to use chipsets from Taiwan-based Via Technologies for three new systems, because the 820 chipset isn't ready. Not exactly what Rambus stockholders want to hear

Is this IBM news new? I don't recall seeing it. Did it happen or is this more FUD?

Ian & AugustWest,

Thanks. I'll try Babelfish from now on.
