Lucent deploys LMDS wireless broadband technology in Argentina for Techtel to offer Internet and multimedia services lucent.com FOR RELEASE WEDNESDAY MAY 12, 1999 MADRID, SPAIN - Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced that it is deploying its OnDemand wireless broadband systems for Techtel of Argentina, a company owned by Techint Group. The technology, also known as local multipoint distribution systems (LMDS), allows carriers to offer wireless Internet and multimedia services. Service providers around the world are deploying optical network and high-speed packet technology to accommodate ever-growing amounts of data traffic spurred by the explosive growth of the Internet. Many of the newest operators are counting on wireless broadband technology to gain time-to-market advantages to reach these customers instead of installing costly dedicated leased lines or fiber optic cable to businesses. The OnDemand family of wireless broadband systems uses microwave transmissions to rapidly deliver high speed Internet and multimedia services to business customers. It offers a practical means for new service providers to rapidly deploy data services. Competitive access providers with licensed spectrum can quickly deploy a connection between high-speed data networks, including optical systems, with enterprise customers. The information reaches computer users through the enterprise's regular local area network. "Once again Lucent is demonstrating its leadership in deploying cutting edge technology in Latin America as we install the first LMDS systems in the region," said Victor Agnellini, Lucent's sales vice president for the Southern Cone. "The OnDemand wireless broadband access solution from Lucent is an attractive option for both service providers, as well as business customers, because it ties the cost of capacity directly to demand." Wireless cuts the time it takes to provision fixed-cost leased line service or to install fiber optic cable to customer locations. Instead of installing costly dedicated leased lines or fiber optic cable to small businesses, many of the newest operators are counting on wireless broadband technology to gain time-to-market advantages to reach these customers. The OnDemand wireless broadband end-to-end network offer incorporates the company's portfolio of data networking, optical networking, switching and access, and the full scope of NetCare® services. The Lucent system employs point-to-multipoint microwave radio links between a strategically located hub antenna and multiple dish antennas that are installed on roofs or building exteriors. Techtel is a subsidiary of Techint Group, one of Argentina's largest industrial holding companies. market for wireless broadband could reach $100 billion over the next 10 years. That's based on deploying all of the currently allocated frequencies. Volpe Brown Whelan's Internet and communications conference."Broadband connectivity will happen ,and there's a high preponderance of this broadband access theme seen here (at the conference)," said Pete Peterson, wireless communications analyst at Volpe Brown Whelan & Co.
