It's true, Vidal is clever to the point of saturation, and more condescending than clever. But how Reagan provided an antidote by being what he was is obscure to me. It isn't as though he were not himself a condescending individual with a hyper-condescending wife. Cleverness he was not much accused of, though. I suppose he could be considered an antidote to cleverness, in that he lowered the curve as much as Vidal raised it.
