AOL To Launch Version 5.0 Of Software In A Few Weeks

SEP 29,1999

SAN FRANCISCO -(Dow Jones)- America Online Inc., the world's leading
Internet-service provider, will launch version 5.0 of its online software in
the next few weeks, AOL Chief Financial Officer Mike Kelly said.
The new version will come with a scheduling calendar, software to handle
photographs and new search features, he said. It also will allow users to
customize parts of the online service's appearance.
Kelly, speaking at the Bank of America Securities investment conference,
said Dulles, Va.-based AOL (AOL) is getting about 50% of people coming onto the
Internet to subscribe to its service.
In addition, growth in the online industry will accelerate over the next few
years, he said.
The "growth in the next wave (of Internet expansion) is just starting," he
said.
Separately, the Dulles, Va.-based AOL and Rochester, N.Y.-based photo giant
Eastman Kodak Co. (EK) announced that "You've Got Pictures," the long-awaited
photo-online service from the companies, is drawing high consumer interest in
trial markets.
In the test cities, including Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Tampa and
Orlando, 70% of AOL users click on the new computer-screen icon for "You've
Got Pictures," according to the companies. Of those who have tried the service,
71% say they will use it again and 87% say they will recommend it to a friend.
"We're seeing tremendous demand in the test cities," Sheila D. Leverone,
AOL's executive director and general manager of imaging and e-greetings, said
in an interview.
"You've Got Pictures" is the latest way for consumers to get digital
photographs online. AOL users check a box on their photo-processing envelope.
Their pictures are then delivered to their AOL account, where users can e-mail
their photos to others and order reprints and other services.
"You've Got Pictures" is expected to be rolled out nationally by the end of
October.
