<<don't ever tell your wife that your portfolio made as much money in a day as she makes in a year. Having done that there are only three possible outcomes -- she expects it of you at least once each month, she quits her job, or both.>>

You forgot one option! she is convinced enough of my brilliant financial acumen that she lets some money be transferred from "her" index-fund account to "my" tech picks account!

And as for duplicating the feat monthly, I am confident that I can steal enough good ideas from you all to do ok! can't stop using exclamation points tonight for some reason!!!

As for job quitting, it will be interesting to see what our friends will do next. The wife in the couple is a smart young professor, well on the road to tenure at a good school. I doubt that she'll quit the field, although you never know. A friend of ours from grad school had a huge, cross-over popular success with his first book. When he didn't get tenure at Harvard, he simply retired to become an independent scholar/author....

PS I should point out that my wife makes slightly more than I do... :)

Merlin, your (side door) remark reminds me of a neighbor family some years ago. The husband spent weekends putzing in his garage, and the whole neighborhood was aware of it. One weekend, my middle son (the one now in the Marines but then about 6 or 7) did one on the guy. He innocently told the other neighborhood kids that Mr and Mrs so and so were probably fighting all the time, so he lived in the garage because she wwouldn't allow him in the house on weekends. You cannot imagine the trouble that caused as he tried to learn who started the rumor. Turned out, it was more true than not, and he was upset at being "outed" as a weekend bachelor.
