Many of the study groups, which are arranged by the students themselves and not the faculty, were taught in Chinese when I was there, so I was excluded from those. Its a major disadvantage since that is where most of the learning goes on. The TAs were mostly asian, so there was a "clubbyness" that I missed out on, which is really key in some ways to making it through.

Berkeley has a real problem because it is a public institution. Private schools such as Stanford enact quotas and will continue to do so I suspect. As far as this Lowell high school situation I really have no opinion. However, it hurts everyone when a school is not diversified in any way I believe. When this issue comes up for Cal one of the interesting arguments in favor of quotas is that the Asian students appear to be underporforming in the entrepreneurial workforce vs. their piers. Of course there are some notable exceptions like Jerry Yang. Based on the university enrollment out here you would expect to see at least 30% corporate upper management Asian - its not there. Other minority groups are much more highly represented so its not a white-only club. It suggests that there is more to learning than excelling on engineering school tests.
