Total Fina Plans to Resume Oil, Gas Exploration In Sudan Dow Jones Newswires, October 1 LONDON -- A senior Total Fina SA (F.TCF) official said Friday that the Franco-Belgian oil giant was planning to return to Sudan after a 14-year absence. Total Fina's Director for East Africa Exploration, Thierry Monmot, told Dow Jones newswires that the company's operations in the troubled East African state would initially focus on further explorations in its existing concession. Monmot said Total Fina's 120,000-square-kilometer Block B, where it carried out seismic surveys in the early 1980s, has "a huge potential" for oil production. The company pulled out its personnel for security reasons due to the civil war in 1985. "Total Fina SA has also bid for another concession over block five in southern Sudan", Sudan's State Minister for Energy John Dore told Dow Jones newswires in a recent interview. "We plan to extend out presence in Sudan as the security seems to be improving," Monmot said. The decision came after the Sudanese authorities pressed Total Fina to resume its exploration activities in the war-struck country. "Sudan is keen to offer Total Fina the possibility of acquiring another tract," the minister added. Block five is situated in southern Sudan, east of existing oil discoveries in south-western Sudan . Dore said an award for the concession will be made after the rainy season, which usually ends by October. The East African country is trying to attract interest from the oil industry after a long period of neglect. Oil is an important asset to Sudan in its bid to break out of its current political isolation.
