I think Zolt is exactly correct. First, this draft dodging stuff is, apart from being factually incorrect, a fig. Its an attempt to drag Bush down to equate him somehow with the current level of sleaze in the WH. Dems and their supporters are behind this continuing disinformation campaign because they would much rather run against McCain who stands the best chance of losing to Gore (or possibly Bradley) if nominated. That said I still believe both McCain and GWB are head and shoulders above the Dem alternatives (and I would support either if nominated) but I have a real problem with McCain's stance on campaign finance "reform". While I'm not real enthusiastic for GWB, I do believe he has a better chance of being elected than MCCain and if the Repubs can hold the House and Senate, I'm excited about the possibilities inherent in having a Repub President with a Repub Congress. We've never seen that scenario. JLA

In my view, an honorable man neither seeks nor accepts special treatment in time of war. I recall during Vietnam, my older brothers and cousins stating a belief that National Guard units were safe havens from the jungles of Vietnam, and they were right, with some very minor exceptions. Johnson wasn't worried about alarming the American public--he was already facing the worst public insurrections in decades. Johnson undoubtedly knew that the Guard had become a refuge of the privileged--look who served in Guard units: Steve Forbes, Dan Quayle, George W. Bush, Jr. Not a coincidence. It was difficult to get into the Guard in those days. GWB wanted in. "Somehow" this message was conveyed to influential people, including at least one very prominent Texas state politicians. He leapfrogged the waiting list. GWB had nothing to do with this? Very hard to believe.

I'll repeat what I said earlier: in any future draft, Americans should refuse to be inducted until it is certified that all politicians' son who are healthy and eligible have already been inducted and randomly assigned to units.

Neo, not only did neither of the Bushes ask for any strings to be pulled, the man, Ben Barnes, who claims to have done it, said that no one asked him to do it. I still question whether he actually did pull the strings. He was the democratic lt. governor and may have known the Bushes but was, in no way, considered a friend. Why would someone do a favor for someone on the other side of the fence without being asked to do so and, even if he were asked? Also, Barnes was accused of crimes of misuse of public funds and information and got out before they could send him to prison. The Speaker of the House at that time, an aquaintence of mine, was sent to prison as part of the group that misused the money.^ ^ ^TD
