Sorry Steve - your post makes no sense. First of all, fiber refers to the transport media, SONET uses fiber, so does WDM. What we're talking about here is the difference between switching electrons and photons (which are derived from electrons but obviously have different electromagnetic qualities).

CNXT is simply talking about a switching fabric in a standard SONET element -a DCS. SONET is merely a standard to interconnect and use standard transport rates between different North American vendor products. In Europe, its called SDH.

SONET uses TDM as synchronous multiplexing scheme, WDM obviously uses different wavelengths. They co-exist very nicely, but are very different. Remember though, the signals are always electrical when transversing the actual SONET gear. They are only converted to light when they travel the fiber.

To get more technical, (see my hobbies in my profile), one may infer that SONET and WDM exhibit the duality nature of light as postulated by physicists regarding the qualities of particles and waves. Ahh...I love this stuff....
