Actually, I don't know it. For example, suppose that George W. wanted to be a pilot, like his dad, but knew that he would wash out if he went into one of the stricter branches? Then going into the Guard would be a way of following in his dad's footsteps by becoming a pilot. After all, why not do something less taxing? And, as I said, the Air National Guard was almost fully mobilized during Korea, so he may have assumed he would be sent overseas. My dad was in the Guard, when I was very small, between "police actions". It was a way to stay home and serve part time, the trade-off being an extended enlistment period. It was not a way to dodge anything.

Can you pretend that John McCain got into Annapolis on his own? Father and grandfather both Admirals.

We do know that McCain earned one thing on his own, what was it, second to worst in his class? With all his breaks few suspected that he would rise to charter membership in the Keating Five.
