THE FALN: MORE BIG CLINTON LIES By DICK MORRIS THE White House has insisted that the FALN terrorists President Clinton plucked from prison were in jail for "nonviolent" crimes. That's not true. A review of documents obtained from the House Government Reform Committee establishes that these terrorists are anything but nonviolent. The facts proven during their trials shows a level of violence and a commitment to mayhem which makes Clinton's claim that they are nonviolent a huge, stunning lie. According to the House Committee, "many of those granted clemency actually were convicted of conspiring to place bombs." Fourteen were indicted for conspiring to construct and plant explosive and incendiary devices at 28 locations in Illinois between June 14, 1975, and Nov. 24, 1979. Segarra Palmer, whose Clinton- shortened sentence ends in a few years, is about as non-violent as Jeffrey Dahmer. According to court records, the federal district judge "found that Segarra Palmer had organized and taken part in the attack in Puerto Rico on a U.S. Navy bus taking sailors to a radar station, on Dec. 3, 1979, in which two sailors were killed and nine wounded." Oscar Lopez, who was offered clemency but refused it, added to his crimes by planning to escape from prison by disabling the guard tower with fragmentation grenades and gunfire. According to the House committee, Lopez planned to have "the military helicopters at a nearby army base blown up to ensure that he would not be pursued" during his escape attempt. "From prison," the committee notes, "Lopez was able to arrange for the purchase of explosives to further the escape plan." While preparing his escape plan, Lopez's shopping list included: fragmentation grenades, smoke grenades, phosphorus grenades, eight M-16 rifles, two silencers, 50 pounds of plastic C-4 explosives, eight bulletproof vests, 10 blasting caps to use with plastic explosive and 100 10-shot clips to use with automatic weapons. This is one of the "nonviolent" men that Clinton decided to pardon. Particularly stunning is the fact that the White House did not even ask the terrorists to cooperate in solving other FALN crimes. The House found that "the White House made no effort to obtain cooperation in solving the many bombings and murders committed by the FALN and Macheteros." The administration's indifference to FALN terrorism now seems to extend to turning a blind eye to ongoing terrorism. The committee notes that "the U.S. Attorney in Puerto Rico has recently informed the FBI that he will not prosecute individuals who steal unexploded munitions from a U.S. Naval military installation on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. It has not been satisfactorily explained why the U.S. Attorney will not prosecute" them. Apparently, they don't want to alienate the terrorists while events unfold in the New York Senate race. Whether one approves or disapproves of the clemency offer, let's all understand that any attempt to call these thugs nonviolent is nonsense. nypostonline.com
