Actually, Daimler merged/acquired Chrysler for the exact reason that it would face severe challenges ahead if it remained a niche player.

Same reason Volvo sold car division to Ford -- it couldn't compete effectively anymore.

Same reason Jag, Lambourghini, Rover, etc. etc. etc. are no longer independent companies. Remember what happened with the great Nissan earlier this year?

The prediction in the auto industry is that there will only be five players in the not-so-distant future: Daimler-Chrysler, Ford/Volvo/Jag, GM/Saab/Isuzu, Toyota, and VW/Audi. Predictions are that BMW, Honda, and even Porsche are going to be assimilated.

It's hard to be a niche player in today's world economy.
