appears just a tad oversold on a 25% haircut

Avon (AVP: news, msgs) shares dived 9 11/16 to
26.

PaineWebber Analyst Andrew Shore downgraded
the company to "neutral" from "attractive." He also
cut his earnings estimates for the fourth quarter to
56 cents from 62 cents. For fiscal 2000, Shore cut
profit expectations to $1.85 from $1.95.
Separately, Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette also
downgraded Avon to "market perform" from "buy."

On Wednesday, Avon warned Wall Street that
although it would meet third-quarter estimates, its
fourth quarter will fall short of expectations by 7
cents. The company believes the last quarter should
yield earnings per share of 56 cents. The fourth
quarter is a critical period for Avon, since it
produces 40 percent of the year's business.
December accounts for half of the quarter's sales.

Charles Perrin, Avon chairman and chief executive,
said the company now expects a 2 percent increase
in sales for the last quarter compared to 5 percent
previously. The shortfall will hurt profits, Avon said. Part of the sales
weakness comes from Mexico and Brazil, where consumers face
economic pressures and currency volatility, Perrin said. U.S. sales for the
fourth quarter also declined. The company expects domestic business to
rise in the low single digits instead of the previously hoped 5 percent.

Avon will accelerate its stock buyback program for this year and 2000.
The company still has $700 million available in the current repurchase
plan, but expects to be more a more aggressive buyer.
