I am sure it was accelerated by the arms race. If the Russians hadn't bankrupted themselves they could have done more to solve their social problems (of course you have to wonder if they would have spent the money that way). I remember talking about the USSR in the early 80's and we all thought the USSR would fall apart because of its ethnic diversity. I think the USSR IN CONTROL was better than what we have now- which is chaos. I am not a chaos lover- although I know good things can come out of chaos, as a pessimist I always figure bad things are more likely.

In a similar vein, I often wonder if we couldn't have avoided a lot of bloodshed and one vexing issue after another if we hadn't freed the slaves.

Del, it's ALL make believe in my book, until the guy with the giant hands pries open your mouth and says, "OK, this might be a little uncomfortable just for a minute."

No offense -- a guy who keeps fresh cilantro in the kitchen can't be all bad.
