Auggie ..

Found this in addition to today's AMZN moves ..

Yahoo and Lycos Stores

Yahoo, with its higher market capitalization, also dominates the store-hosting business. "Store host" is Web parlance for online-shopping-mall landlord.

Meanwhile, Lycos (LCOS: news, msgs) is set to launch its own online mall, called LYCOShop in November. Lycos Chief Operating Officer Edward Philip told CBS MarketWatch that the new cyber store will be similar to Amazon's in that it will charge a monthly fee for merchants who want to join the Lycos shop. Unlike Amazon, Lycos customers can sign up for a Lycos credit card and use the card at retailers who sign up to have a virtual storefront with Lycos. Philip would not disclose how many merchants or products the company will have at launch. See Volpe Brown Whelan confab.

Yahoo initiated its move into that field in June 1998, with its purchase of ViaWeb. When its Yahoo Stores were launched, Yahoo boasted 1,000 retailers.

Today, Yahoo Stores comprises more than 6,000 retailers that offer nearly 3.8 million products.

The division is among the fastest-growing business units at Yahoo.

Seems most transactions in the 'hosted' stores will be
on CC .. the biggest merchant processors are FDC / NDC /
NIS / TSS / NAP .. Still wonder if transaction volumes
will increase as a result of e-commerce initiatives or merely
migrate from the traditional retailers to the e-stores with
total transactions processed remaining somewhat constant ???
