Hitachi {6501}, Matsushita Electric {6752} and Toshiba {6502} have announced a joint standard for recording and playing back images on DVD -RAM, a rewritable disk memory. The technology would record high-resolution digital images for 120 continuous minutes on one side. Users can get instantly to the start of any program on the disk, and the DVD -RAM protects copyright. Some of the present generation of DVD players would be able to play back content from the disks. The three companies plan to propose their new standard to the DVD forum, in which more than 200 companies participate. It will have to go up against a separate format promoted by Sony {6758}, Pioneer {6773} and Philips.
