Del, my point was; "good" or not, the non-Russians in the USSR along with peoples of Eastern Europe deserved the chance to go their own way. Frankly, I think some results of the changes have been horrible but, on balance, things have gone far better than they might have. Breaking up is hard to do (who was it Neo, it's driving me nuts!). I only wish we had been far more aggressive in establishing military relationships and alliances with Russia. I think there was a moment there we could have taken most of the nukes off the board and brought almost all the rest under joint control. Might have cost a trillion but, oh my, what a chance not taken. We might have, with the help of real scholars like Joan and others, brought a better understanding of Russia's paranoia about its security to the table. I would wager that 95+ percent of Americans (including politicians) have no clue. FWIW, my sweetie and I reached out in a substantial way to a family of Bosnian refugees that arrived in our area five or six years ago. We have been rewarded many, many times over. I can think no one (other than relatives) who we are closer to today. Even from chaos.....always the possibility of something good. Pay no attention to FT. If Hitler had put some dried chilies and fresh cilantro in the bratkartoffeln he might have called off the carnage and spent more time looking for good salsa recipes. The stuff Il Duce sent was the nearly tasteless and useless Italian Parsely -- no wonder relations were strained. Del -- I respect our profound differences on some issues, but, to use a "feelie" refrain, some of y'all are ad homineming The Gipper to death. I hate to keep taking the bait but I probably will. Mike
