Japan's August Shipments of DVD , MD Players Show Strong Gains 09/30/1999 Comline Telecommunications COMLINE NEWS SERVICE (Copyright 1999) Japan's August domestic shipments of DVD players came to 24,000 units, a year-on-year gain of 90.9%, according to results announced September 29 by the Electronic Industries Association of Japan. Shipments of radio-cassette MiniDisc (MD) players came to 69,000 units, about 2.4 times the year-earlier amount. August results showed strong gains for digital equipment overall in commercial electronics. Automotive-related electronics also showed strong gains. Car-navigation systems grew by 45.8% to 88,000 units. CD players for car installation were up by 30.4% to 335,000 units and MD players for car installation grew by 26.6% to 31,000 units.
