Not huge YET! And for a company that needs every dime of rev,,,
CHINA, September 29, AsiaPort -- Compaq has evolved into a strong
competitor in the local laptop computer market with its new products
named Armada promoted early this month. "We aim to expand market
share," said Colin Zhang, a senior manager with Compaq. China is
expected with Compaq. China is expected to consume 300,000 laptops a
year with Shanghai accounting for about 40,000. Compaq occupies 10
percent of the national figure and it sells about 4,000 laptops in
Shanghai a year. At present, all are imported but they will start to be
processed at its Shenzhen factory at a later date.

El-- On the HR scene we get a little more detail and a lot more delay--- looks like 30 in 3000,, A little drop on hiring for HR it makes you wonder if a CFO will cost more and the stock will drop more on that announcement...

HOUSTON, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp. <CPQ.N>
on Wednesday said it hired Yvonne Jackson as vice president of
its human resources operations, putting her on the firing line
overseeing the computer maker's previously announced plans to
cut back roughly a tenth of its workforce.
Jackson, a veteran human resources staffer, said in an
interview that she plans to join the world's largest maker of
personal computers on Nov. 8 from Diageo Plc's <DGE.L> Burger
King food chain, where she is now head of human resources.
"When I came in to Burger King six years ago we were doing
something similar to what Compaq is doing in terms of
realignment for the first year," Jackson said of her experience
managing a restructuring that also led to substantial layoffs.
The employment chief said she envisions the restructuring
lasting up to a year before she can focus on working with
Compaq senior executives to develop new management that can
help propel the company's growth and aid in digesting its
recent acquisitions.
Ron Eller, a Compaq vice president, is serving as interim
executive in charge of human resources until Jackson arrives.
Jackson is replacing Hans Gutsch, Compaq's former human
resources chief, who resigned in mid-June. Gutsch was a
long-time associate of Eckhard Pfeiffer, Compaq's former chief
executive, who was pushed out by the computer maker's board
after a series of management miscues that led growth to stall.
The Houston-based company is seeking to rebound from a
brutal battle for market share in its core PC business, while
also integrating the acquisitions of big business computer
suppliers Digital Equipment Corp. and Tandem Computer.
In July, Compaq announced plans to make net reductions in
its roughly 67,000-employee workforce of between 6,000 and
8,000 staffers over the next six months. Compaq said it would
eliminate 1,600 jobs in Singapore in late August during the
first of these cuts but has yet to identify other targets.
"Yvonne Jackson's proven expertise in developing people and
her understanding of the importance of close relationships with
our customers will be key to driving the company forward to
renewed levels of growth," Michael Capellas, Compaq's recently
hired president and CEO, said in a statement on the hiring.
"We look to Yvonne to be an integral member of the senior
management team," he said.
She previously held positions at consumer goods company
Avon Products Inc. <AVP.N> and at Sears, Roebuck and Co. <S.N>.
Jackson was hired with the help of an undisclosed top U.S.
recruiting firm, a Compaq spokesman said. The company has yet
to hire a new chief financial officer since Earl Mason left the
position at the time Pfeiffer was pushed out as CEO in April.
The spokesman said the CFO search was progressing, but
declined to discuss any details of the timing of a new hire or
even whether a short list of candidates had been developed.
